Noticing

We often hear people say that Decemeber is the worst time of the year.

The reason given is either that they are alone while everyone else is surrounded by their families or they are so surrounded by their families that they wished they were alone.

One of the tools that you could use to navigate through this time is Noticing. Well, what is Noticing?

It’s about being present to what is happening around you and how it affects you.

One of the tools that you could use to navigate through this time is Noticing. Well, what is Noticing?

It’s about being present to what is happening around you and how it affects you. It is also about what you do, in other words, how you react or respond. 

When you react to something you do it automatically without thinking of what the consequences of your action will have on yourself as well as others.

When you respond to something you take into account all the dynamics pertaining to your situation and you make a calculated choice which is then implemented by behaving appropriately (comfortably, in a way that feels good for you and others).

Before you can respond to something you need to learn to notice what’s happening so that you can make a choice.

What you need to notice is:

1. What happens to your body - such as holding your breath, clenching your fists, experiencing a sense of spacing out, nausea, restriction in your throat, butterflies in your stomach?
2. What feelings come up - such as mad, glad, sad or scared?
3. What recurring thoughts start getting loud, strong and persistent?
4. What behaviour do you automatically use to react to the situation?
5. What childhood memories do all of the above evoke?

The spin-off to applying this tool is that you will begin to learn new things about yourself.

It is by getting to know yourself better that you can begin to take care of yourself appropriately.

Take a moment, this festive season, to observe yourself.
